Engine Lab release notes
What’s new in Engine Lab 1.7.
Build an engine, put it in a car, and test the complete setup. Version 1.7 expands the engine and sound simulator with new ways to build, drive, and compare your work.
Engine Lab 1.7 has been approved for distribution. Availability of the update can take time to propagate across App Store storefronts. The update adds Challenges, a Vehicle tab, experimental turbo controls, and more detailed engine tuning.
Challenges: build to a brief, then test your car.
Choose a Challenge, build a car to its requirements, run it on the simulated test track, and earn medals. Game Center leaderboards let you compare qualifying results with other players. Apple approved ten leaderboards alongside version 1.7.
Game Center is used for leaderboard sign-in and results; the core engine simulation remains on device. Challenges are not offered on the China mainland storefront.
A Vehicle tab with a complete simulated drivetrain.
Put your engine in a 3D car with a gearbox, driven wheels, tyre slip, and working brakes. The redesigned Drive cockpit on iPhone and iPad brings brake, throttle, and hold to rev into one presentation. The rev limiter now cuts fuel too.
Experimental turbo and more engine tuning.
Explore turbo spool, wastegate, intercooler, and knock-control settings, with boost shown on Drive. Turbo remains an experimental simulation feature.
The tuning tools now include port fuel injection, custom cams, headers, runner lengths, throttle-body settings, and crankshaft types. Start from a saved baseline so you can compare each change by ear and against the model’s output.
Physics-based dyno pulls and per-cylinder graphs.
Dyno pulls now run on the engine physics. Live graphs show temperature and fuel for every cylinder, giving another way to inspect a build alongside its torque, power, and sound.
These remain simulated estimates for exploration and comparison. Engine Lab does not measure a real vehicle or provide certified engine calibration data.
Also available from version 1.6: Build Bench and live 3D engines.
Design an engine from a single to a V12, hear it as you build, and compare a saved version with your current setup. Each built-in or custom engine gets a 3D view generated from the live simulation. Orbit, zoom, slow the motion, and tap parts for readings, or return to the classic 2D cutaway.
Version 1.6 also added a 3D gearbox and a gearing chart with top speed in each gear. Manual downshifts that would over-rev the engine are refused.
Start with a small, repeatable experiment.
Read the guide to building and tuning an engine on iPhone and iPad, or watch the 20-second demo with engine sound. Keep one saved baseline, change a setting, and compare the result before trying a Challenge.
